If the Air A7 doubles the GPU performance from the iPhone A7 (since they said it was double the A6X, which had the same GPU performance as the A7 GPU in the iPhone), which one would the Mini be using?

Sigh, I shouldn't think about this stuff.

*which A7, as there seem to be two different performing models on the GPU side

They've increased the clock speed of the GPU I would guess. The A7 GPU is quite a bit faster than the A6x in more modern workloads, btw.

Love my job, since I've been bringing in $5600… I sit at home, music playing while I work in front of my new iMac that I got now that I'm making it online(Click on menu Home)

or maybe Apple disabled something in the 5S A7 version?

Does this have the m7 processor?
  • tipoo - Tuesday, October 22, 2013 - link

Not really sure how much point there would be, who tracks their walks and jogs with an iPad?
  • solipsism - Tuesday, October 22, 2013 - link

tracking your exercise movements easiest way to explain the M7 but remember the iPad had an accelerometer from day 1 so this is just a welcome advancement that can be used by apps across the board.

does this have the m7 co-processor?
  • ssiu - Tuesday, October 22, 2013 - link

Yes it does. It is mentioned in official spec: http://www.apple.com/ipad-mini/specs/

    What about RAM?

Using 512MB wouldn't make sense (wouldn't be usable with the retina display). On the other hand 2GB is unlikely for the mini. I hope the Air has that amount.
My best guess is 1GB for the mini, which is still not bad.

Same A7 as the 5S, 1GB. Not A7X this time.

Maybe Apple just said that for marketing purposes, we'll see when it get's thoroughly reviewed.
  • tipoo - Tuesday, October 29, 2013 - link

Forgot the source, google it if you want, but it is indeed 1GB.

Whatever happened to numerical differentiation between products. I seriously hate that trend.

Also, waiting for the first Chinese tablets to use that display panel. That's a good size for a tablet for my wife. :)

Another key aspect of the A6X vs. the A6 was the wider memory bus. If Apple uses the same A7 as in the iPhone 5S, then we could be looking at a memory bottleneck at full retina resolutions.

I think it is the same A7 chip they used in the 5S, ipad air and mini. They just tweaked the clock speed of cpu and gpu to reflect the wanted battery life. So 5S has 1.3Ghz but Mini likely got 1.4 and Air gets 1.6ghz while the gpu on Air probably gets to 533mhz while the mini gets 350 or 400 mhz. This way controlled by the firmware, it is easy to manage te performance vs battery life of the devices.

That wouldn't affect memory bandwidth though. There would still be a single 64 bit wide memory channel at 1333 Mhz where as the previous A6X had a 128 bit wide 1066 Mhz (roughly 1.6 times faster).

Looking at the specs, I notice that mini w/o cellular has Digital Compass and while mini with GSM has Assited GPS. I understand it would be hard to have Assisted GPS without GSM, but does it mean that only minis with GSM will have GPS?
What is Digital Compass then? I believe I can imagine what it could be (accelerometer with gyro), but I am not sure how it could help with location, especially when there is no GPS.
  • purerice - Wednesday, October 23, 2013 - link

My guess would be by scouting WiFi signals as that is the only other communications chip in there.
If so it would limit the usability to locations with multiple WiFi signals.

Hmmm, they are so similar (other than price), what to choose....
