Any idea as to what DAC it uses? I went from a Galaxy S to an LTE S3 and the audio quality is horrible compared to the Wolfson DAC on the S. Even my 4G Nano blows the S3 away. I like this LG phone's aspect ratio and screen size for my hands and am hoping that it might be a good upgrade path if it has a DAC that is not crap. Otherwise I will either have to lose some money and exchange for the international S3 or wait for the S4 and hope it is better.

A solution could be the purchase of a lower end amp to compensate. Unless you want some serious audiophile level listening experience, and Fiio E6 or E11 should be good enough. That's just my opinion though seeing as I'm more of an enthusiast rather than an audiophile.

An amplifier won't cure a poor DAC implementation, if that's the real source of the lower sound quality.
  • Araemo - Tuesday, September 18, 2012 - link

No, but a USB dac/amp would. And they're supported (at least if you have cyanogenmod on your LTE S3, but I think some are even supported by stock software)

Personally, I use the car dock for audio so an external dac isn't as useful for me.. but when I'm actually playing audio I don't notice the difference as much. (I can hear it when I'm parked and the car is quiet, but with road noise, not so much)

Am I right in assuming that this phone will not play well with T-Mobile 4G in the US?
  • dagamer34 - Monday, September 17, 2012 - link

    This thing is a BEAST.

No kidding, who's got the giant mitts to hold these things? It's all I can do to operate my HTC One S with one hand. Maybe HTC should have called it the Two S for two hands only, might actually have to think about buying an iPhone.

The phone looks very exciting at first glance. Is this the fastest cell phone in the world (since OMAP 5 only has 2 A-15 and 2 M-4 cortex cores and since i-phone 5 only has 2 A-6 Apple customized cores)? Adreno 320 plus 4 28 nm Krait cores must be amazingly fast.

This phone seems much larger, higher resolution and faster than the i-phone 5.

What is the battery life on this phone? Front and back camera? Please tell us more ASAP.

PS. Your podcast on South Korea is awesome!!! Seoul is nice. Still listening to the rest of your and Anand's podcast.

Out of curiosity, why do you spell it "i-phone"? I've seen plenty of other people do it that are very familiar with its specs so I can't imagine you don't know how to spell the name of the device with the most mindshare. That tells me that you are spelling un-correctly as a passive-aggressive move. Is that correct.
  • sciwizam - Monday, September 17, 2012 - link

Yes, that is correct. Thanks for the psych analysis.

If you haven't noticed, the poster seems prone to hyphenate.
  • Zink - Tuesday, September 18, 2012 - link

Yes 1008anan is baiting us hard for sure. Did you see he hyphenated every single ARM and Apple CPU wrong? Cortex-M4 was even mangled to “M-4 cortex”. Adreno 320 on the other hand was left untouched; we have a Qualcomm fanboy on our hands. I can confirm that you are indeed correct with your critical analysis of passive-aggressive fanboy mishyphenation. 1008anan is offensively demonstrating his spite for rival mobile GPU design firms in an attempt at trolling us.

You on the other hand managed to spell “incorrectly” wrong and unnecessarily hyphenate it which is a greater offense than incorrectly capitalizing iPhone with an unnecessary hyphen.

Your reasoning falls victim to the fallacy of Accident. You claim that if [P]<“plenty” of knowledgeable people mishyphenate iPhone out of spite> then [Q]<knowledgeable user 1008anan is being passive-aggressive> . You cannot apply your (likely false) statement [P] to the specific user 1008anan because it is a vast generalization.

Request: Can you confirm from LG if their firmware will have OpenCL drivers?
  • Arbie - Monday, September 17, 2012 - link

Micro-SD of course. I'm not going to carry around any piece of electronics with no ability to load media cards. This is in the dumb-phone category.
  • MadMan007 - Tuesday, September 18, 2012 - link

Yup. Expect me to replace a high-capacity PMP with a phone, it damn well better have an SD slot. Oh well, at least having a 'must have' feature like that makes deciding on a phone easier.
  • JasonInofuentes - Monday, September 17, 2012 - link

    that's all.
  • jjj - Monday, September 17, 2012 - link

It's like every exciting device ,phone or nexus 7, ends up with no SD and i can only hate the .....( whatever harsh language is ok with the site's rules) that made it.
At least the Maxx HD has SD but it's not quad :(
  • shabby - Monday, September 17, 2012 - link

Is it really 768 pixels wide or is that supposed to be 720?
  • Rits - Wednesday, October 10, 2012 - link

Its slightly over 720p. Nothing abnormal.
  • HaydenOscar - Monday, September 17, 2012 - link

What advantage does this different battery voltage have?
  • nafhan - Wednesday, September 19, 2012 - link

Generally, higher voltage will allow for more power in the same amount of space.
    It's straightforward multiplication: 2.1Ah * 3.8V = 7.98Wh
  • fishman - Tuesday, September 18, 2012 - link

No removable battery = no deal. Since I keep phones for more than 2 years, the ability to be able tor replace the battery is critical.
  • Rits - Wednesday, October 10, 2012 - link

You do realise that the battery CAN be replaced, its just not readily accessible. I really do not understand the bone people have with sealed batteries. It helps build quality. If you're so concerned, get a compact power bank and toss it in your bag or car or desk drawer or wherever .. I travel a lot and never had one instance where I had to replace my battery, from Nexus One to Galaxy S to GNex to One X, not once. I don't need to continually use my phone non-stop for 8 hours! I can get through the journey/day and put the phone on charge easily as long as I'm still within civilization. If not, a portable power bank can keep you going for a couple days at least.
If removable batteries were such a huge need, the iPhone would've been a total failure!
  • abrahavt - Tuesday, September 18, 2012 - link

This is a killer phone and I would have considered it but for the fact that it has no micro-sd card and no removable battery and the fact that it is being released with ICS instead of Jelly Bean. Looks like they are making the same mistakes as HTC.

Hardware specs are quite appealing, but the design of this smartphone is just dumb not at all upto the standard marks of such high end phones. And yeah, one thing to ask is that does this phone support Intel WiDi sharing technology?

Overall, a smartphone worth investing in. In addition, new phone seekers can check LG's latest campaign on its India Facebook page, that allows the winner to get this beast for free! So visit LG India FB page to participate and play with your luck.
