Would be great if we could see USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 support on prosumer video equipment. You can now get a PCIe card with a 2x2 port so you could make workflows much smoother when editing 4k.
Is that dumb text really printed on the drive... *facepalm* Why is it called "game drive" if no consoles and very few pc's support the standard yet? Who's putting games on it? Personally I'd use it for work, as a scientist I need lots of fast storage. But pulling this out in a meeting with my boss, no thanks. At least it doesn't have red gamer accents?
Also is this new usb standard compatible with Thunderbolt? Or rather why is this just not a Thunderbolt interface?
Because of TB3 devices will work with computers with TB but not work with devices strictly USB. USB3 via USBC port will work with both TB and USB-only hosts.
Hey, Hey, don't blame us for Intel being a generation behind (at least) on everything technology related. PCIE4, USB 3.2 gen ANYTHING, 7nm, etc...
On a more serious note, I agree that putting 'gamer' on the device is cheesy. However outside of that I see no other issue with this product. It works on basically any system with USB (including Thunderbolt).
What could be seen as dumb is printing "game drive" on it and then not doing the obvious thing associated with "game" (or "gaming" for that matter): Drenching the drive in an excess of infantile RGB blinken lights. On the other hand, perhaps some people with a shred of dignity managed to discourage WD's marketing dept. from doing precisely that, and calling it "game drive" was the compromise. A better world in small steps, or so me thinks...
I certainly would not expect ANY scientist to use the term dumb text, at least no self-respecting scientist I know(and I know quite a few) would use such basic vocabulary.
And would it be that hard, as a scientist to use a sharpie and write over the word gamer? LOL
Sharpies are like currency in the lab, highly protected. I wouldn't waste my sharpies on something like this, I'd just wipe it down with some acetone to remove the "juvenile text". There, better?
The good thing about this is it has the ability to achieve >10 Gbps speeds while still being backwards compatible with older USB. Up to now there are too few portable drives that use JHL7440 to provide single port TB3/USB compatibility.
it may or may not be compliant due to power restrictions etc.
also...I truly 1000000% despise them using big numbers such as Gbps speeds (or as has been done with memory since forever when it comes to storage, internet etc)
as the makers always use "up to" but often enough in the real world, perfect case, rare is this seen
I digress, who knows until it gets proper reviewed and the like.
so far, Sandisk as well as WD (overall) not been the "best" when comes to much of anything
my opinion of course, but backed with enough real world numbers.
not worst, certainly far down the ladder from the best....I imagine however, that being usb 3.2 ASmedia chip, likely it will perform quite well, durability, reliability, proper connectivity time will tell, as will how hot it runs and/or how well it handles sustained usage, many things via USB do not "quite" live up to the "big sticker numbers"
I don't know, most products I buy worked as advertised. Samsung didn't lie to me about my m.2 SSDs, my ISP (Comcast) didn't lie to me about my gigabit internet, etc.
Can’t help thinking of “2x2, hands of blue”. They missed out giving a Firefly reference for the fans out here. =) But I guess WD Blue doesn’t deserve a 2x2 interface.

Does this work with TB3 ports?AdditionalPylons - Friday, December 6, 2019 - link
As far as I know no TB3 controllers support 2x2. It should still be compatible and negotiate as gen2 with 10 Gbps rate in a TB3 port though.AdditionalPylons - Friday, December 6, 2019 - link

Its a P5.0 GameDrive. So obviously the PS5 is going to support this standard, and it will look like this drive ;)
