Apart from the current brouhaha with Android and Google's app store, the key shortcoming of this Honor line remains the absence of a micro-SD slot. Why? It's not like these phones are especially well protected against water and dust. Not that even this requires leaving out removable storage, as a number of IP 67 or 68 certified phones that have it show.

Huawei is likely aiming to swap out all microSD to their proprietary NM card either ways.

    No jack also.

Huawei also has a locked bootloader, so you can't install your own custom firmware. My Honor phone olny got updates for 6 months, now i'm stuck old android on a recent phone.
  • evilpaul666 - Wednesday, May 22, 2019 - link

They did the same on the Honor 8. Stayed on top of updates for 6 months and then randomly provided security updates a month or more late for about two years. Stopped that entirely now as of March. And if you didn't have the China/India model phone (like me) it was even worse with six month lag times in North America/Europe.

Hmm. I don't have this issue (in the US) with my Mate SE. I just received the May Android security patch a few days ago.

If you frequently use your phone as a satnav then an LCD screen won't suffer from burn in.

What's that amplifier board in the macro shots? I'm into audio
  • Andrei Frumusanu - Tuesday, May 21, 2019 - link

    It's a 1KHz 127dB THD signal generator board.

Hi Andrei, is it just me, or the exynos S10 got better with updates? it looks like in some shots, the pics are equal or even better compared to the S version?
  • Moizy - Thursday, May 23, 2019 - link

Interesting, using it for distortion testing? Cool stuff - thanks for your work on here Andrei, appreciate your testing and analysis

    Page 2: Snapdragon S10
Do you mean Samsung S10 with Snapdragon SoC?
Though I don't think this is a mistake, it is better to assume some readers don't care and are not informed about the SoC of smartphones, and mention the brand of the phone.

How much money is Intel paying you to keep quite about there new exploits?

Obviously more than AMD is paying them to talk about Intel's exploits.

Or possibly they are waiting so they can publish a meaningful article instead of a storm of rumors, innuendos, retractions, and corrections.

I honestly cannot understand, how one can call this camera performance good. The processing is god awful! It looks like someone used a bad watercolor filter to destroy all traces of finer detail. Especially greenery looks not even remotely natural. The images might look good on a small screen. But they are bad as soon as one just wants to use a crop or just dares to view them in full resolution (which in the upcoming era of 4k screens is barely more than fullscreen on a monitor or TV).

Makes you wonder how it got the highest dxo score https://www.dxomark.com/honor-20-pro-camera-review...
  • s.yu - Saturday, May 25, 2019 - link

What's there to wonder about? It's DxO.
  • Andrei Frumusanu - Tuesday, May 21, 2019 - link

It's not the best, but there's quite worse out there from other devices. Hence "good" instead of excellent.
  • danielfranklin - Tuesday, May 21, 2019 - link

    Yep.
I sold my Mate 20 Pro and went back to the Pixel 3.
There was no comparison with the camera.
That said i have an iPhone XS Max as well and its camera is awful next to the Pixel too.
  • zamboni.palin - Wednesday, May 22, 2019 - link

I agree it's heavy-handed processing. But by the same token I honestly cannot understand how one can call the S10 pictures good: ridiculous colors, shadows blown completely out of proportion in HDR - as if you're making photos to look for forensic evidence, not capture real-life environments. I much prefer the Pixels.
  • Andrei Frumusanu - Wednesday, May 22, 2019 - link

The S10's have the most accurate representations of the scenes and shadows; you don't clip shadows to near black at noon under full sunlight.
  • zamboni.palin - Wednesday, May 22, 2019 - link

I cannot judge that, not having seen the real thing, so I must defer to you. But I find the Samsung colors (based on your pics and experience with previous Samy phones) far too strident, cartoonish even. And while you don't render shadows dark at noon, neither do you shine a flashlight on them. Again, though, I might be wrong 'in light of' the real thing.

"Overall the Honor 20 Pro is quite the odd device", from the Conclusion site.
Why is an odd device? And why "the". As non native speaker, I'm missing the
    message. Can somebody help?
  • asfletch - Wednesday, May 22, 2019 - link

It's just a turn of phrase - nothing to worry about. "Quite an odd device" would convey almost the same meaning.
  • BushLin - Tuesday, May 28, 2019 - link

Nothing to worry about... Except the Huawei ban, no access to Google Play or security updates!
  • Peskarik - Wednesday, May 22, 2019 - link

The cameras in ALL Asian phones are optimized with Asian market in mind.
That means human faces look unnatural, "beautified", you look like an alien.
I prefer Pixel phones, the photos come out much more natural looking.

In the end, all phone cameras, 5 or 10 of them with godzillion pixels etc produce low quality photos, it is just the nature of the thing, you want a good photograph for more than just showing on phone screen or sending through Whatsup - you get a proper camera.
  • edsib1 - Wednesday, May 22, 2019 - link

Do you run your battery life tests in performance mode? If not the performance is about 30% lower so not really a fair comparison to other flagship SOCs.
  • Andrei Frumusanu - Wednesday, May 22, 2019 - link

Yes it was in performance mode.
  • 1_rick - Wednesday, May 22, 2019 - link
