    So if I'm understanding this the big benefits of 5G for smartphones is increased data rates and decreased latency? While that is nice I'm actually more interested in 5G at home so I can finally cut the cord from Comcast completely and actually force them to compete in the many markets where they are the only internet provider (like mine).

    So QCOM thinks that taking what we have for 20 years on a PC and no one cares - the ethernet speeds - but now making them wireless is so huge revolution that they want to sell their 5G cellphones for $300 more and their modems for 10x the price of Apple A12 chip? Funny guys.

    I don't know why you're conflating ethernet speeds (which vastly exceeded the speed you'd get from ISP for the time period you're talking about) with the outside network speed that an ISP/carrier provides. Very different things.

    5G enables things that have otherwise largely not been possible (game streaming - as in playing games that are rendered on servers).

    I have little interest in 5G until it actually has great coverage and certainly am not interested in paying a premium for it as a feature anytime soon (especially since the bandwidth limits and other nonsense the carriers will pull that will neuter its usefulness), but there's reason to be excited for what it can offer in the future.

    Will they allow you guys to test 855 extensively?
    Any guesses on how much power these 5g modems and antennas need to run as intended.

    I would agree with Qualcomm on this. They obviously don't have the best single threaded performance and benchmarks prove this. However looking at real world applications I see Qualcomm consistently perform at the top of the stack. Let's take the Dolphin Emulator for example, notoriously lightly threaded, needing substantial single thread performance on both PC and mobile, and Qualcomm's performance there is greatly better than all other competitors. The Exynos 9810 and Kirins for example are like watching slide shows while even a SD660 is getting 60 fps in many games. Sure GPU drivers are most likely a large part of that, but nevertheless the biggest single threaded real life workload I can think of on mobile is dominated by Snapdragon. Maybe what he is saying here is the competition has better single threaded performance but the rest of their systems (schedulers, drivers, etc.) are worse so it doesn't really matter.

    The competition is not 5% single-threaded difference like other Android chips, it is 2x single-threaded difference on the Apple side...

    The 855 brings that single threaded deficit down to about 30% if you're using a synthetic benchmark. Apple also pays a heavy price in battery life for putting a 7-wide current hog of a CPU (although world leading in performance and efficiency) into the iPhone; it was simply over-provisioned for the battery they could put in that form factor and they had to throttle performance after about about a year and tried to do so without telling consumers. Also, good luck finding any iOS apps that make use of that CPU brawn: compute heavy tasks are mostly done by co-processors and the CPU's ALU performance matters a lot less than memory performance.
